Good for the plastics industry? The vinyl record returns slightly!

Compared with CD, vinyl records have a tendency to return in the music industry (relatively speaking).

According to a mid-year report issued by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on September 10, vinyl records accounted for 62% of the physical records sold in the first half of 2020, valued at $376 million. After being almost completely replaced by CDs in the 1980s and 1990s, vinyl records became a prominent product again.

Of course, the physical copy of music is only a small part of the record business. What I want to explain here is that when I write this article, I listen to Spotify through Bluetooth speakers instead of using my large stereo system and CD player.

As a result, when shoppers spent more than US$300 million on CD and LP records, streaming music revenue increased by 12% in the first half of this year, from US$3.4 billion two years ago to US$4.8 billion.
